Varsity Tourney
Congratulations to Kelly and Mai who will be playing in the semi-finals for the 2010 St. Paul City Tournament. They played a great final game against their rivals from St. Paul Como to earn the position. Something tells me they are not done yet..
Also returning are Doua/Da who hope to finish in the top 5.
Law, Natalie, Nancy, Hannah - guaranteed top eight. Bao/Pajsua - guaranteed top four.
Singles #1: After sitting around until roughly 5:00, Law still came out ready to play after a first round bye. She easily defeated her Arlington opponent in two games. Law plays a Harding opponent in tomorrow's quarterfinals, and hopefully Nancy X. in the semi-finals.
Singles #2: Natalie Kramer set aside the nerves and beat her Como Park opponent 21-9, 21-9. She then battled Harding and won a long match. Natalie has Johnson #1 tomorrow. As we saw today, number one doesn't mean much (see Singles #4). Let's hope for a Kramer/Johnson matchup tomorrow.
Singles #3: Nancy Xiong beat Arlington, and then Como Park's number one to reach Thursday's quarterfinals. Nancy took care of business as usual. Play your heart out tomorrow and you can beat Harding/Johnson. I didn't see who won, but both are athletic players that get to most birds. Anticipate them returning everything, and it should be a positive outcome.
Singles #4: Hannah Johnson probably had the worst draw of any Central player today (if rankings mean anything). She was matched up against Arlington 1 first round. She won 21-15, 21-13. Hannah was ready to play and it showed. Second round draw was another #1 player, this time from Humboldt. Hannah won 21-12, 21-12. She plays Harding in tomorrow's quarterfinals.
Doubles #1: Ia/Ong Xiong: Quite possibly the best three games of the day. Ia and Ong played a very skilled Highland team and came up just short. 23-21, 17-21, 16-21. The match was right in front of the bleachers and at least 4 other coaches commented on the play of Ia and Ong. Maybe I messed this one up when I said, "Nice shot, Ong." It was Ia. The look I got let me know I was wrong. You will be a team competing for a Varsity spot next season. Great job ladies.
Doubles 2: Bao/Pajsua took on the number 1 team from Arlington and won in three. They were excited for a bit, but then had to refocus and play their next game against Highland Park's number 1 team. I didn't see the final points, but the grins on their faces when they came to report scores said it all. Let's win this thing Bao and not Elizabeth!
